A flexible pcb is a printed circuit board with a flexible base and copper layer that can be bent and folded, which is why it is referred to as a flexible PCB. They are used in various electronic devices, and have numerous advantages over rigid PCBs, such as being able to bend and fold. However, they also have certain drawbacks, such as being more expensive.

There are many different types of flexible PCBs. The choice of which type to use depends on the needs of the specific application. The two main categories are static and dynamic. A static flex is one that will only be bent a few times in its lifetime, while a dynamic flex is one that will be bent frequently and must be able to withstand thousands of bends. It is important to understand the differences between these two types before deciding which type of flex is right for your project.

The most common base raw materials for a flex are polyimide (PI) or polyester (PET). Other polymer films that can be used include PEN, PTFE and Aramid. The type of material that is chosen will have an impact on the quality of the finished product. The thickness of the copper foil is another important factor to consider when choosing a flexible pcb. Thicker copper foils will have better performance, but they are also more costly.

What is a Flexible PCB?

In addition to the conductive layers of copper, a flexible circuit board will contain dielectric layers and a protective solder mask. The solder mask is used to protect the circuit from environmental damage, and it also helps to maintain consistency in electrical conductivity. The dielectric layers are made of fiberglass or epoxy resin, and they help to keep the copper traces in place.

Copper foil is typically used for etching the conductive patterns on a flex PCB, although there are other options available. For example, some manufacturers use tin or soft gold for coating the exposed pads on a flex circuit, while others use organic coatings. These coatings protect the copper until the final assembly process, such as SMT bonding or wire bonding, takes place.

Depending on the type of application, a flex circuit board may have either a single-sided or multi-layered design. A single-layer flex circuit has a PI or PET substrate, a rolled copper layer, and a PI layer (coverlay). A multi-layered flex has a PI or PET substrate, two rolled copper layers, and two PI layers. The layers are connected through plated-through holes or surface mount components. Lastly, flexible PCBs can be designed with stiffeners to add support or to allow for a greater radius of bend. Stiffeners are normally FR4 or PI, and they can be inserted into the ends of the circuit. Alternatively, they can be attached with adhesive to the edges of the circuit.
