Earlier this week, rumours erupted in the European footballing media, claiming Barcelona are facing the risk of being suspended from the UEFA Champions League.
The speculation came shortly after the European Court of Justice ruled UEFA and FIFA’s move to ban the European Super League as unlawful, striking a major blow to the governing bodies.
Barcelona themselves were reportedly not surprised at the rumour coming shortly after the ECJ decision. However, they still have no such knowledge of the club being potentially banned from the Champions League.
UEFA to decide Barcelona’s fate in February
A recent report from MARCA has now offered an update on the matter, suggesting that UEFA will take a decision on Barcelona’s expulsion sometime next year.
As per the report, UEFA will take a decision precisely in the month of February next year, as the European football governing body continues to investigate the matter.
Barcelona are under investigation due to the club’s questionable balance sheets. If the club fall under UEFA’s hammer, they could be running the risk of being suspended from the Champions League.
Barcelona not the only club
It must be noted that Barcelona are not the only club currently under investigation from UEFA. The governing body is also investigating other clubs, that are operating with questionable balance sheets.
PSG, Manchester City, and AC Milan are among the clubs currently under investigation, which is hardly surprising.
Barcelona, in particular, though, could be under the microscope as the Catalans are one of two clubs who have continued to vouch for the Super League.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see UEFA’s decision on these clubs in the month of February next year. Until then, the club must find ways to get rid of the bloated balance sheets.
