Earlier this week, it was reported that Frenkie de Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, had landed in Barcelona. But he couldn’t meet sporting director Deco, who had to fly out to Porto for personal reasons.
A recent report from SPORT has now offered an update on the matter, confirming that Dursun has finally had a meeting with Deco.
What was the meeting about?
The report reveals that Deco and Dursun met informally on Tuesday. The meeting served as a prelude to potential talks over the extension of de Jong’s contract.
In fact, both sides appear to have scheduled these talks for spring, even though Barcelona were looking to hurry up the talks.
This meeting comes against the backdrop of de Jong’s revival in the Barcelona setup since the turn of the year.
The midfielder has indeed been in excellent form, even moving ahead of Marc Casado in the pecking order in recent matches. This was something even Hansi Flick alluded to, after the narrow win over Rayo Vallecano.
De Jong, for his part, is happy at Barcelona and wants to continue playing under the leadership of Flick.
However, the midfielder’s contract talks have been time and again impacted by media chatter over a supposed high salary that Barça pay him.
Nevertheless, both sides have currently agreed to freeze any negotiations until the final phase of the campaign.
Barcelona, for their part, consider de Jong’s contract extension as critical, especially now that the Dutchman has once again become a key part of the squad.
