Official: Barcelona defender picks up MCL strain, will miss Spanish Super Cup

For the half-way point of the Spanish league season, post-Christmas break, Barcelona took a trip to the Canary Islands to lock horns against Las Palmas.

Garcia Pimienta’s side took the game to Barcelona, showing off their brilliant offensive patterns, and dominating proceedings for most of the first-half.

The blaugranes never properly got the chance to slow down the game to their own speed, as Joao Cancelo picked up a knee injury in the 11th minute of the game, before Munir el Haddadi scored for Las Palmas, assisted by another ex-Barcelona player Sandro Ramirez.

Cancelo had to limp off the pitch, with fear that he will likely miss most of the second half of the season, given the general nature of knee injuries.

An official update from the club has now confirmed that Cancelo underwent medical tests in the morning, that revealed a MCL strain on his left knee. The player has been sidelined, and his recovery will determine his availability.

A report from SPORT has claimed that he will miss the Copa del Rey clash this weekend, and will also not travel with the Barcelona squad to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup.

Barça will take on Osasuna in the semi-finals of the competition, before facing one of Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid if they qualify for the finals.
